Demba Squared

Newcastle have taken steps to address their shortage up front by signing Freiburg & Senegal striker Papiss Demba Cisse.  This will surely help in the long term but for now he will be returning to Africa to play alongside his compatriot Demba Ba in the African Cup of Nations.

Cisse has been a target of Newcastle United since the summer after scoring 22 league goals last year in the Bundesliga.  He has continued his scoring streak with 9 goals in 17 matches this season despite his team battling relegation.  He was reportedly targeted by other Premier League clubs like Sunderland and Tottenham but he has completed his £10 million move to Newcastle and signed a 5 and a half year contract.

There was a nice article written about him last year by Raphael Honigstein after his quick start to the season.  He seems to have come up through the ranks quickly and his goal scoring record over the past three seasons is very impressive.

Hopefully he will just add to the success of Demba’s leading the line at St. James’ Park.
